Community Victory: Reworld Withdraws Its Permit Application! After months of tireless community organizing, countless meetings, and powerful testimony from residents–some for the first time, Reworld (formerly Covanta) has officially withdrawn its Special Use Permit (SP2025-043) application for a proposed waste processing facility in Armourdale. For decades, Reworld (formerly Covanta) has carried a long record of environmental violations, safety failures, and community harm across the United States, leaving residents nationwide with deep distrust. Armourdale experienced that same pattern: no transparency, no meaningful engagement, and critical information withheld from the very people whose health was at risk. Yet in the face of silence and misinformation, our community rose up. For months, residents, volunteers, and RiSE4EJ organizers knocked on doors, shared information with their neighbors, translated materials, held bilingual meetings, and spent hundreds of hours educating, mobilizing, and advocating from the ground up. This was grassroots power at its strongest; families, elders, youth, and community leaders organizing block by block to protect their neighborhood. Their persistence, courage, and collective action turned a lack of toxic industrial transparency into a catalyst for unity, and ultimately into the victory Armourdale achieved. This win belongs to the people: to every neighbor who showed up, spoke up, translated, shared flyers, gathered signatures, counted trucks, made calls, and refused to be silenced. It’s proof that grassroots power works and that when communities come together, we can protect our health, our air, and our future. But our work isn’t over. We will continue to stand watch, stay informed, and hold industry and government accountable to the people they serve, and to ensure that Reworld doesn’t just move down the road to harm our neighbors.
